Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market, Giant's Beat the Reds, Reese and Bryan and the DaDa Lounge

I got coffee for us and we left the hotel about 9:30. We walked down Market to the Ferry Building and the Saturday Farmer's Market.

Took only about 25 minutes to walk. We decided to reconoiter a bit for our dinner on the 22nd. That will be great fun. We walked around a bit and then bought some pastries-a bran muffin and some fruit tarts. Then we had this amazing Pork Tostada to die for.

We weren't sure what we wanted to do, but we decided to walk down the Embacadero to AT&T Park. We even thought we might go to the Giants game if the right tickets were available. The walk took about 25 minutes and we found we could buy tickets in the third deck view level for 17 bucks each. On the spur of the moment we decided to go for it.

View from Section 332 View Level

The back side from the upper deck landing.

It was a great game. Barry Zito pitched and won 4-2. Eugenio Velez homered and Bengie Molina fell a triple short of the cycle with three RBIs vs. the Reds, sending starter Barry Zito off with another second-half victory, 4-2, on Saturday. The Giants are now just 5.5 games back of the Dodgers.
After the game we walked up Second Street to market and the over to Macys where we ate dinner, bought a coffee maker and then a gift card for Bryan and Reese.

We decided to try the Rick Bayless fast food place, Frontera Fresco, and the Hurache I had was pretty good. (Mexican corn flat breads layered with Frontera® black bean spread, your topping choice, chipotle sauce and tangy fresh greens.)

Not sure that Christine liked her torta that much. (Grilled Mexican sandwiches with avocado, Frontera® black bean spread, dressed greens, pickled tomato and smoky chipotle or cilantro crema.)

We went back to the Nikko and hung out until it was time for the party at nine.

The most memorable moment was that I got a personal phone call from Laura Ling. How great it was to hear her voice. What an honor that she made time to call me. She sounded great.

We grabbed a cab and made it to the DaDa with no problem. We had walked right by the place on the way back from the Giants. As it turned out we knew NO ONE there but Annette and her husband from Benecia. Their pictures from Fiji were amazing and Reese looked great, the healthiest I have seen her in months. We stayed a couple of hours and had a great time. I think we grabbedd a cab and made it back by about 11.

Day Sixty Three: Friday, August 7, 2009: King Tut and the Grubsteak

Day Sixty Three: Friday, August 7, 2009
Nice Urban Run, King Tut, and the Grubsteak

Went out for a run at about 7. Took my usual favorite route. Over to Grant through Chinatown to Columbus. I made my pilgrimage to Vallejo to see the site of the jazz club Keystone Corner that I loved so much back in the late 70s. Too bad it's gone. Down Columbus to Bay then up Hyde (wow is it steep) then over to Lombard so I could run down the crookedest street in the world. I then went up to Nob Hill and even went in to Grace Cathedral.

Surprised to find that it had doors that are from the molds from Ghiberti's Baptistery's doors in Florence.

As I was walking in front of the Mark Hopkins who do I run into but the couple from Ohio that sat next to us last night in Fleur de Lys. What a crack up.

I then got us Starbuck's and we rested and chilled the rest of the morning.

Then we drove out to Golden Gate Park to see if we could get into the King Tut exhibit without having to buy tickets ahead of time. I hate those Ticketmaster fees. we couldn't find parking close but we finally just drove down JFK before we found one. We figured another urban hike would do us good.
I had also never been to the new de Young museum before so it was fun. The only bad part is that the new de Young is ugly. Weird blend of wire and metal.

Looks a lot better here than it does in real life.

We were able to get into the Tut exhibit. We just had to wait until 2:30, about an hour. No problem we could look through the museum. The tickets cost $32.50 each and $7 each for the audio for a grand total of $79.

The strange thing about the exhibit was that many of the biggest pieces were not in the show as they were int he 70s. And later I found this on the website:

Many individuals have fond memories of King Tut’s Gold Mask (also known as the “Funerary Mask” or “Death Mask”), which traveled in the 1970s, and have looked forward to seeing it again in the current exhibition. There has, therefore, been some confusion around the absence of the Gold Mask in Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs.

During the 1980s, the Egyptian government declared that the Gold Mask of Tutankhamun was a national treasure and too fragile to travel. As such, it will never leave Egypt again. Today, the Gold Mask resides at its permanent home, the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. It and the other 5,000 artifacts from Tut’s tomb, including his solid-gold inner coffin, will soon be housed in a new museum, the Grand Egyptian Museum, being built by the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities alongside the pyramids in Giza.

After we left the exhibit we went up in the tower and the view was spectacular. A 360 degree view around the park and toward the bay and down town. Stunning. From there we took a look at the Japanese Tea Garden and then walked back to the car.

View from the tower.

Grubsteak

For dinner we decided to try another Diner, Drive-ins and Dives place, the Grubsteak on Pine near Van Ness. It didn't open until 5 so we had to hang around outside for about ten minutes. The main part of the diner is an old Key System trolley car that came across the bay from Oakland. My dad was a conductor in the Key System back in the 30's

I had the Grubsteak a burger with bacon, cheese and a fried. Christine had the Claim jumper which had fried mushrooms and onions. I had fries and she had the onion rings. I had a Portuguese beer and Christine had a Coke. All for a mere $40.

Day Sixty Two: Thursday, August 6, 2009: SF Eating Extravaganza

Day Sixty Two: Thursday, August 6, 2009
Dottie's True Blue Cafe
Hubert Keller's Fleur de Lys

Last night I decided to see what had been on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives in the SF area and found Dottie's True Blue Cafe. It is on Jones between O'Farrell and Geary, less that three blocks away.

http://dinersdrive-insanddives.blogspot.com/2009/06/comfort-cookin-dv0612.html

We woke up at six and decided to get dressed and get over there before it opened at 7:30. We were probably in line by 7:45 and there were already 15 or so people in front of us. When the door opened, we got right in although we probably were the last served of the first seating.

Blueberry muffin as an appetizer. Because we were going to have to wait awhile for our food, we decided to try some of the backed goods which are all made on the premises.

Waiting for our order.

Pancake with cinnamon and a hint of ginger.

Christine's Proscuitto Scramble. I forgot to take a picture of my chorizo and salsa scramble. Oh well. It came a little after the first plates did.

All done. We left at about 8:45.

There was still a huge line when we left.

The beautiful bride at Union Square.
We went for an "urban hike" to help the food settle and then we headed back to the hotel for some serious relaxation. christine took a nap and I have been working on my Language and Composition course.

We contemplated just staying in the room but decided instead to go on another urban hike-this time down to California and Market and back. On the way back we passed Masa's ad it appeared to be closed and then we walked by Fleur de Lys to see exactly where it was on Sutter. Should be an interesting experience tonight. Stay tuned.

We walked up to Fleur de Lys on Sutter for or 6 p.m. reservation.

It was just a five minute walk from the Nikko so we arrived promptly at six. We had to wait a moment at the bar, we took a quick look at Chef Keller's new burger book, but we were soon ushered into our table. The billowy material that flows from the center of the ceiling was beautiful and unique, like nothing we had ever seen.

I tried to figure out whether or not we had the power table but at any rate where we were was perfect. It was highlight by the couple from Ohio and their local friend who sat next to us. We coould literally hear every work of his monologue. do not think he stopped talking through out the entire dinner. One of those guys who has done everything and been everywhere. It really wasn't a bother, just another part of the show.

The options for the meal were to have a three-course, four-course, five course, or vegeterian pris fixe dinner with or without the wine parings. We knew it would break the bank but we decided to go for the four-course meal with wine parings. The four-course cost $82 each with an extra $58 for the wine pairing. Total $140.

Our waiter was named Boris and we began with three choices of breads. One with pistachios and figs, another with olives, and a third was a delicious plain baguette. We also opted for just plain tap water. None with or without gas.

Amuse Bouche

We began with this little amuse bouche. The small cup in the left was a creamy Vichyssoise with a dot of paprika oil and on the right was a fava bean puree with crouton and shaving of parmesan on the top

Course One: Appetizer

This one that I had will be fun to describe. A bit of an appetizer sampler called a Symphony of Choucroute Fondant with Caviar. What was on the upper left in the mini martini glass was a pureed sauerkraut called a fondant with a bit of caviar in a brussel sprout leaf on the top. In the upper right was a chicken sausage with home made dijon mustard. Below that was a Foie Gras and Smoked Duck "burger," the fries, called "golden panisse fries," were made from chick peas, a small salad, actually quite salty was in the middle and in the left botttom corner was a sesame beef tartare in the single cereamic spoon.

Christine had the pan seared artisan Foe gras was described on the menu as having rhubarb, corn fondue and truffle sauce, but there was also seasoned popcorn on the plate too. She even got a small dish with extra popcorn

Course Two: Fish, Crustacean, and Mollusks

I had the Maine scallops and toasted pinenuts with sliced potato marbles, sundried potatoes, olive sauce, and Banyuls reduction

Christine had the Sunflower Seeded Sea Bass with endive and mustard fondue. It was accompanied by coriander coulis, basil emulsion, truffled mushroom French toast.

Interlude with the most tasty dish of all.

Course Three: Meat, Poultry, Game

I had the lamb duo. Duo of Colorado Lamb and Lamb Shank "Tagine." Eggplant confit, golden raisins, pine nuts, pearl "Israeli" couscous, Tunisian spices and harissa. The lamb shank may have been my favorite dish of all.

Christine had the pan-seared buffalo strip steak, thinly sliced with rustic vegetables. Enhanced with a spicy lemongrass, ginger and red wine sauce.

Course Four: Dessert and Cheese Course

Christine got the cheese in place of dessert. The oldest was the orange one on the right. In the upper left was a Swiss. On the bottom in the middle was my favorite a creamy bleu from France. There was one from Virginia, but I'm not sure which one it was. One the right was a bowl of nuts and golden raisins and other treats.

To end the meal we had preordered the Grand Marnier Souffle which as expected was spectacular

Some ice cream with a raspberry.

Our Anniversary/Birthday treat. I know our anniversary was a little while ago but when the hostess asked on the phone if it was any special occasion, I said anniversary, but I meant Christine's birthday, which at least was somewhat closer. There was a flame in the middle of the sugar cone on the top of a chocolate mouse. Very fun.

We ended the night with an espresso. We also order one of Chef's Burger books and had him sign it.

We had seen Chef Keller walk in earlier in the evening and asked Boris if there was anyway we could meet him. He assured us that it would be no problem. So as we walked out to leave in the bar area there he was. We also met his wife and had pictures taken. He just couldn't tell us if he won Top Chef Masters but we let him know he was really our favorite.

The Jordans and their new best friend, Chef Hubert Keller

The glory of the three-star French cooking celebrated in the famed Michelin guidebook lives on, happily for local gastronomes, in this venerable downtown restaurant. The décor (walls lined with mirrors and upholstered in busy printed fabric, a trademark enormous flower display tucked under the tented ceiling) can feel a trifle fussy and old-fashioned. But the extraordinary cooking of chef/owner Hubert Keller, presented by a flawless team of friendly and knowledgeable servers, is so exhilarating that the setting begins to feel as perfect as your meal. There are four prix fixe options (three-, four-, or five-course menus, or a set five-course vegetarian menu). You choose the courses from a vast two-page listing with a dazzling array of dishes both fabled and inventive. Luxury ingredients abound: Foie gras is not only present in two different starters, a classic tasting as well as an innovative pairing of a tiny casserole alongside a "burger" of minced duck and seared foie gras, but also in a potato with butterfish, with truffles inside a roasted breast of squab, and garnishing a quail stuffed with sweetbreads. Gifts from the kitchen -- an amuse-bouche of lobster salad on top of carrot gelee, a tiny onion tart, and a refreshing grapefruit-Campari sorbet -- enhance the beautifully orchestrated evening. It's pricey, but a similar meal in New York or France would be double the sum.

Trip to San Francisco

Got up and ran. Then went down to school to copy my CSPA receipts. Talked with Vera and saw Kim and Rich.
Decided to go to Performance to see if I had to buy the bike today but had to wait until ten until it opened. So I went over to Starbucks and ran int Rich Joy. I thought I recognized him and I called out "Rich" and when he turned around I knew it was him.
We had a nice conversation and we agreed to all get together when Sue was down.

I found out the bike sale would be on until the end of the month so I went and filled up the car and headed home.

I think we wound up leaving around noon. We took the car since the van had stared over heating again.

We made it down with no problems and checked in to the Nikko.

The last time we were here was for my 40th birthday while the OJ trial was going on.

Room with a view. Looking down O'Farrell St. toward Macy's.

Another Media Blitz.

We all were waiting for word from North Korea once we knew Bill Clinton had arrived. Brendon was assured from some of his State Department sources that this would be in and Bill would get their release.

We still could not believe it until we got final confirmation.

As the morning progressed we heard of Bill meeting with Kim Jung Il and then that they were pardoned, then released and finally that they were on the plane home.

I had a class from 8-12 to be able to train the staff on the new online Zangle grading system.During the morning I began getting calls from the media wanting to speak with me about the imminent release.

First I agrees to speak with a woman from ABC in San Franciso who covers then capital. I met here at 11 a.m. then I met with David Bieneck from KCRA at noon which was great as he was the first one who interviewed me back in March.

I had to go home to meet the guys from RC Willey with the HDTV between 1 and 3. At home I did a phone interview with the Bee and TV interviews with Anny Hong at CBS 13 and the woman who has been at all the events from Fox 40. Somewhere in there I also did a phone interview with KFBK. At about 3 I got a call from the Bee and they wanted to get a photo. They sent out a photographer, Renee Byers, and she wound up driving me back to school to take a photo of the poster. As we were driving down I found out she had one a Pulitzer. Here is the picture she took that ran in the Bee.

The girls are freed.

In the morning I met Jeff for coffee which was great. We haven't gotten together for months to try and solve the world's problems.

At the same time I was able to have AAA come and tow the truck which wouldn't start. Luckily it turned ot to just be that the battery wasn't connected well when I got the new battery last week. I drove back to Sears and they took care of it.

I volunteered to do the coverage session. seemed like the right thing to do. I knew that it would help everyone out and that Shauna would really just be winging it. It went well and I had fun doing it. The crazy thing was that they were working on the roof right above us and all sorts of crazy noises were coming from above the entire time.
